Although it has always had a pretty prolific audiovisual amount of productions, Serbian films are not the most known when they exit their borders. It is true that almost 10 years ago everybody knew about the movie A Serbian Film (2010), more due to its marketing and deliberated shocking sequences than it’s quality, but pretty much that’s it. And hey, it was a good movie, but definitely not representative of what Serbian filmmaking is.
South Wind (2018), called Juzni Vetar in original Serbian language, was by far the most acclaimed movie in Serbian festival Filmski Susreti, that took place in the city of Niš this August. At the festival, one of the most veteran and important ones in the Balkan country and running since 1966, the movie achieved several awards including all the best acting categories. It also won the Jury Prize for Best Production at the Tuzla Film Festival last month, which took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Being called “a great blend of comedy, romance and action. A dark, gritty crime flick that shows how corrupted our society is”, South Wind (2018) is co-written and directed by Milos Avramovic, whose previous and debutant film was horror mystery A Tailor’s Secret (2006) (Krojaceva Tajna as the original title). Milos Bikovic, Miodrag Radonjic, Dragan Bjelogrlic, Nebojsa Glogovac, Milos Timotijevic, Jovana Stojiljkovic, Bogdan Diklic, Hristo Shopov, Ivaylo Zahariev, Luka Grbic and Srdjan ‘Zika’ Todorovic, the protagonist of the referent A Serbian Film (2010), are starring.
With a smart dosage of humor and frantic action sequences, the story in South Wind (2018) runs around a Belgrade criminal in his late twenties, whose one reckless move causes an avalanche of events that will greatly affect the lives of those around him. The movie had its theatrical release in Serbia a couple of weeks ago and since then it has achieved a big amount of positive reviews. This weekend it opens in some European countries and the 15th of November will hit some theaters in the USA. If you are lucky enough to have this movie screened in your city, think of giving it a try. You can watch here its official trailer with English subtitles:
