Level 16 (2018) is a science-fiction thriller written and directed by awards winner Canadian filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy. It tells the story of sixteen-year-old Vivien who is trapped in The Vestalis Academy, a prison-like boarding school, keeping to herself and sticking her neck out for no one. One day she is reunited with Sophia, the former friend who betrayed her. Together the girls embark on a dangerous search to uncover the horrifying truth behind their imprisonment. Soon running for their lives, the girls must save themselves or die trying.
The movie has been screened at several festivals since 2018, including Berlin International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Vancouver International Film Festival, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Panic Fest and Glasgow Film Festival, where it has achieved quite positive reviews praising the solid plot and even comparing it with Golden Globes winner TV series The Handmaid’s Tale (2017– ).
The filming of Level 16 (2018) took place in a retired police station in Toronto built in the 1930s, which the filmmakers made sure to adjust in any way they saw fit in order to create a “very real and gritty” set, as it was reported. Katie Douglas, Celina Martin, Sara Canning, Peter Outerbridge, Amalia Williamson, Kate Vickery, Sarah DaSilva, Joelle Farrow, Josette Halpert, Shanice Johnson, Yasmin Lau and Kiana Madeira star in the movie.
After a limited theater release in March and being available online on some Video on Demand platforms, Level 16 (2018) is finally coming out on Blu-ray and DVD today. You can watch its official trailer here:
