Nobody thought the Saw franchise would end with Jigsaw (2017), as it neither ended with Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010), right? One of the most popular horror sagas of the last decades, and also one with the most loyal fans, should always have the open door for new entries. We fans think that, and also the producers and filmmakers know that. So, it is always good to hear a new Saw film is in development.
With the working title The Organ Donor (2020), this movie is set to be the ninth film of the Saw franchise. Darren Lynn Bousman, a good knower of the saga having directed the films Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006) and Saw IV (2007), as well as other popular horror movies like Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008), Mother’s Day (2010), 11-11-11 (2011), The Devil’s Carnival (2012), Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival (2016), Abattoir (2016) and St. Agatha (2018), is back to the franchise to direct this new film. Actor and comedian Chris Rock came out with the idea and storyline of The Organ Donor (2020). The screenplay based on his story has been written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, also knowers of the Saw universe after writing the script for the latest installment to date Jigsaw (2017), as well as other titles like Sorority Row (2009) or Piranha 3D (2010).
The Organ Donor (2020) began filming yesterday in Toronto starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols, playing the roles of a police detective, his father, his partner, and a police captain respectively. In the words of Joe Drake, Lionsgate‘s chairman, “we think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt“. He also stated that Rock’s idea was “completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise“.
Known extensively for his comedy roles, it could be shocking that Chris Rock has been involved in such a bloody and dirty film as a Saw franchise title could be. Not only him bringing the main plot and starring the movie, but also acting as executive producer. Still, he already confessed to Variety last year that “I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place“.
We will have to wait for its release on October 23, 2020, to see what The Organ Donor (2020) offers. And, obviously, the fans are also wondering if Tobin Bell, who has been playing John Kramer aka Jigsaw in the other series of movies will reprise his role. Yes, he has been dead a few installments ago, but that didn’t stop him to be back, didn’t it?
