And we say he is back, but he never was gone. Since the appearing of his first feature film Rubber (2010), a very bizarre love story about a car tire with telekinetic superpowers on the run for the commitment of several murders and falling in love with a human girl, France-born director Quentin Dupieux has been delivering his tiny jewels in a very regular way. Altogether with several short films, for the last decade, he managed to put out a collection of movies, flirting with the genres of crime, horror, and mystery, but always with his unique and surrealistic sense of humor. Titles like Wrong (2012), Wrong Cops (2013), Reality (2014), Au poste! (2018), and Deerskin (2019) are mandatory candy for his many followers around the world.
His newest film is entitled Mandibules (2020), and it centers Jean-Gab and Manu, two simple-minded friends who discover a giant fly in the trunk of a car and decide to domesticate it to earn money with it. With that plot, and knowing the style of the director, we can ensure this is not going to be the typical giant monster insect horror film, this is going to be another silly surrealistic experience only apt for open minds and no sense of ridiculousness.
As it is a constant in his filmography, Quentin Dupieux is the writer and director of Mandibules (2020), as well as being in charge of the cinematography and edition. The movie is starred by Adèle Exarchopoulos, Dave Chapman, India Hair, Grégoire Ludig, Coralie Russier, Bruno Lochet, David Marsais, Raphaël Quenard, and Roméo Elvis.
Mandibules (2020) had its world premiere at the 77th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2020, where it collected mostly positive opinions, and it will also be part of Fantasy Filmfest in Germany this month. It is scheduled to be released in France on December 2, 2020, by Memento Films, although we will have to wait for more international release dates.
