Yes, the headline is correct. We are not drunk or accidentally back in the 20th Century. Robert Englund will get in the skin (never better said) of his most iconic role for a documentary. The tagline says “You’ll see the entire process as makeup effects artist Robert Kurtzman transforms Robert Englund into Freddy Krueger once again”. And oh man! What else can we expect!! The name of this little jewel of documentary for any horror fan is called Nightmares in the Makeup Chair (2017) and is written and directed by Mike Kerz, co-founder of the Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention, Chicago’s largest and longest running horror convention and film festival.
Robert Englund didn’t fit into the Freddy Krueger suit in a motion film since Freddy vs. Jason (2003), over a decade ago. He has been no part of any of the remakes the franchise has had in the last years, so that makes this ocasion to be a very special one.
In this occasion, the magician to bring Freddy Krueger back to life will be Robert Kurtzman, a man with around a hundred makeup and special effects credits since the late 1980s. He has done works for unforgettable movies like Evil Dead II (1987), Bride of Re-Animator (1989), Army of Darkness (1992), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Scream (1996), Ghosts of Mars (2001) and a long uncountable list. He has been under the orders of directors such as Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, John Carpenter, Kevin Smith, Scott Spiegel, Brian Yuzna, Clive Barker, Don Coscarelli or Michael Bay and worked to help stars like Jeffrey Combs, Danny Trejo, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas or Bruce Campbell to achieve some of their more iconic performances. Also this is not the first time he will work on the Freddy Krueger figure, since he was special makeup effects artist for A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989).
Seems like 2017 is being some kind of reunion year for Robert Englund and his horror movies alter ego. Yesterday for St Valentines Day he was hosting the annual Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network “Rip Your Heart Out” event when this year’s highlight was the all-weekend “Elm Street” Marathon. And us, the fans, can’t do but to hope this new romance between Robert Englund and Freddy Krueger stays as long as possible. Specially after this preview! Oh, check it out, check it out!!
