The fans of body horror world wide, a genre that mastered Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg in the 1980s and 1990s, can be happy this year with the arrival of Replace (2017). Following the trail of what has been called New Wave of Female Oriented Body Horror, with titles like Dans ma peau (2002), Thanatomorphose (2012) or Contracted (2013), Replace (2017) tells the story of young and beautiful Kira who is afflicted with a strange disease where her skin ages rapidly to the point of drying out and crumbling away. But soon she discovers that she can replace her own skin with somebody else’s.
This German-Canadian production is the debut film of German filmmaker Norbert Keil. The story is co-written by Keil together with Richard Stanley, writer of popular films like Hardware (1990), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) or Nacho Cerdà’s The Abandoned (2006). Filming took place in several locations in Canada and Germany.
The film has already been screened in several genre festivals, receiving a candid welcome and even some nominations, like Best European Film at Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film (BIFFF) 2017. So if you have the chance this summer to catch the movie in your nearby film festival, don’t hesitate!
Replace (2017) is starred by Rebecca Forsythe, Lucie Aron, and the horror superstar Barbara Crampton as Dr. Rafaela Crober. And if you want to know more about it, don’t miss the beautifully creepy trailer for the movie:
