If Warner Bros. studio is obsessed squeezing as much as possible the DC Comics universe with the imminent super hero invasion of Justice League (2017), Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018), Sony Pictures are following the path with their little Marvel niche. After rebooting the arachnid hero universe with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), now it’s the time for Spidey’s nemesys. Yesterday it was announced that this new installation of the franchise is already in pre-production, and that Alex Kurtzman was the chosen one to direct it.
The last time we saw the character of Venom in the big screen was in Sam Raimi’s last title of his franchise Spider-Man 3 (2007). That time, the role was played by Topher Grace, in what critics said it was the worst title of the trilogy from the beginning of this new century. For this new movie we don’t have any names for the cast yet, but it is known that Dante Harper, writer of Alien: Covenant (2017), is hired to work on the script together with Scott Rosenberg and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) story creator Jeff Pinkner.
Alex Kurtzman is not new in this game of big budget blockbusters. He is an experienced producer, with titles like TV series Xena: Warrior Princess (1995–2001) and Sleepy Hollow (2013- 2017), or feature films Star Trek (2009), Cowboys & Aliens (2011) and Ender’s Game (2013) on his back. Besides, he’s directed the new version for The Mummy (2017), already in post production and expected to be one of the hits of this summer. With this kind of resume, it is easy to think he knows what the masses want to see when they are in the big movie theatres with a big box of pop corn in front.
