Sundance Film Festival is not only one of the most important film festivals of the season, but due to its early happening in January, it sometimes dictates what are going to be the must-see titles of the year. And Swedish psychological horror Knocking (2021) is a good example of that.

The movie centers on Molly, who after suffering a traumatic incident moves into a new apartment to begin her path to recovery. But it’s not long after her arrival that a series of persistent knocks and screams begin to wake her up at night. Molly’s new life begins to unravel as the screams intensify and no one else in the building believes or is willing to help her.

This is the debut feature film of Swedish director Frida Kempff, who gained some recognition with her short film Micky Bader (aka Bathing Micky) (2010) winning the Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival. The screenplay has been written by Emma Broström based on the novel by popular Swedish author Johan Theorin, whose work was also the source for the mystery thriller Echoes from the Dead (2013).

The main cast for Knocking (2021) is formed by Cecilia Milocco, Albin Grenholm, Ville Virtanen, Krister Kern, Alexander Salzberger, and Charlotta Åkerblom.

After its premiere at Sundance Film Festival on January 29, 2021, Knocking (2021) was also part of Göteborg Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival, Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, Outfest Los Angeles, and Seoul International Women’s Film Festival. In October it is also scheduled to be part of the Fantasy Filmfest in Germany.

Yellow Veil Pictures has the distribution rights for the film in the USA and it has scheduled it for a theatrical release on October 8, 2021, followed by a digital release on October 19, 2021. Here you can watch the official trailer for Knocking (2021).
