2018 could be the year Nicolas Cage can win some respect back after a long painful period of downfall. If his movie Mom and Dad (2017) is opening this weekend in the USA –Read our review here–, Mandy (2018) is probably the title that can give the actor a break in being a perpetual joke.
Written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, the son of the late action filmmaker George P. Cosmatos whose debut film Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) was a science fiction and horror surprises a few years ago, many high expectations are set on Mandy (2018), only his second film. Set in 1983, it tells the story of a man, played by Cage, who will is thirsty or revenge against the murderers of the love of his life. A hell of violence will break loose against the religious sect. And us the blood craving audience are expecting all kinds of visual atrocities! Andrea Riseborough, Bill Duke and Richard Brake also star.
Mandy (2018) is produced by Elijah Wood‘s co-owned company SpectreVision and distributed by XYZ Films. And as Daniel Noah, SpectreVision’s Head of Development has stated, “Panos is one of the most vital young filmmakers alive, a pop-culture Kubrick in the making”. He continues “Nicolas Cage is a veritable god to those of us who grew up watching his classic performances. Bringing these two together for this surrealist, heavy-metal-soaked story of battle axes and demon bikers is unfathomably exciting to us”. Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, author of the scores for Denis Villeneuve’s most notorious films Sicario (2015), Arrival (2016) or Blade Runner 2049 (2017), is in charge of the soundtrack.
Mandy (2018) will be screened for the first time for some lucky audience this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. It is fair to think after that, the first reviews will lead to some official images and teaser trailers. Meanwhile, the people from Entertainment Weekly released yesterday in exclusive the first poster of the movie that you can see here:
