And, today, yet another movie about aliens invading our beloved planet Earth in the most unnecessary moment. Or, at least, that’s what is going on in the background of the story, since Save Yourselves! (2020) is basically a couples comedy with the science-fiction addition. Because this Brooklyn couple decides to “disconnect” by ditching their phones for a weekend and wind up missing news of an alien attack.
Save Yourselves! (2020) is the first movie together of the tandem of writer and directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. It is also their debut feature film after a few short films. The starring couple is formed by Sunita Mani, that has played the role of Trenton in TV series Mr. Robot (2015–2019), and John Reynolds, known for his appearance in the popular series Stranger Things (2016-2019) as Officer Callahan. With them, Ben Sinclair, John Early, Jo Firestone, Gary Richardson, and Johanna Day also star.
In Save Yourselves! (2020), Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani) are a hip Brooklyn couple who, like many of their friends, find themselves dependent on technology and unable to put down their phones. Fearing their mindless scrolling may impact their connection with each other, they seize the chance to head to an isolated cabin in the woods, vowing to unplug from the outside world for a week. Sheltered from texts and push notifications, they are blissfully unaware that the planet is under attack. As strange events unfold, the couple must figure out a way back to civilization, or what’s left of it.
Save Yourselves! (2020) had its premiere at Sundance Film Festival this year where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize award. Shortly after, Bleecker Street acquired distribution rights to the film. It is scheduled to have a limited theatrical release in the USA on October 2, 2020, and after that, it will be available as Video on Demand on October 6, 2020.
