Mortal Engines is the first of four novels in Philip Reeve‘s quartet of the same name. The book focuses on a futuristic, steampunk version of London, now a giant machine striving to survive on a world running out of resources. The book was oriented to youth science fiction and fantasy young adult lovers, 12 and up. Published in 2001, it has won several awards.
Now, Peter Jackson is producing the movie adaptation of this first book, whose script he also wrote together with his frequent collaborators Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. This will mark the debut in a feature film for filmmaker Christian Rivers, better known for being the storyboard artist, assistant art director and visual effects supervisor in several of the Peter Jackson most notorious movies, including the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), or The Lovely Bones (2009) and King Kong (2005).
The book starts with the mobile city London chasing and catching a town called Salthook. Tom Natsworthy is leading a group of people inside of the city when one of the citizens attempt of murder. From there, a semi-robotic resurrected human called Shrike, an ancient weapon called Medusa and several other plots going on in the city take place. The Anti-Traction League, a group opposed to Traction cities, also will bring conflict to the already frantic situation.
The movie Mortal Engines (2018) is starred by Hugo Weaving, Robert Sheehan, Stephen Lang, Jihae, Joel Tobeck, Hera Hilmar, Frankie Adams, Colin Salmon, Caren Pistorius, Leila George and Patrick Malahide among others in the wide cast. It is expected to hit theatres the 12th of December worldwide.
