It is said that Ozploitation’s 1980s classic Fair Game (1986) was one of the main influences on Quentin Tarantino when he was in the development of his little jewel Death Proof (2007), which happens to be my favorite work of the popular Tennessee-born filmmaker. A wild revenge thriller where a young woman running an animal sanctuary in the outback takes her revenge on a trio of kangaroo hunters who terrorized her.
In the style of other sexploitation classics like Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), or Ms .45 (1981), in Fair Game (1986) Jessica is the ranger of a wildlife sanctuary in the Australian outback. Hell breaks loose when she is confronted by three kangaroo hunters. Bored with killing kangaroos, they decide to kill the animals in the sanctuary, and when they see how attractive the owner is, they decide to have a little “fun” with her, too. Turns out that they may get a bit more “fun” than they bargained for.
This was the debut feature film of Mario Andreacchio, which was followed by the horror drama The Dreaming (1988) and a bunch of family-oriented pictures. His frequent collaborator Rob George was in charge of the screenplay.
The main cast in Fair Game (1986) was formed by Cassandra Delaney, Peter Ford, David Sandford, Garry Who, Don Barker, Carmel Young, Adrian Shirley, and Wayne Anthony.
The movie was released in Australia in the summer of 1986. Later in 2008, it had a DVD release in the Aussie territory, followed by a re-release in 2018. Now, Dark Star Pictures has scheduled the film for a theatrical release on July 8, 2022, followed by a digital release a week later. A physical release is also planned for August 2022.
