In the same year that Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta (2021) is coming out stomping hard and shaking the foundations of faith and sexuality, with a slight revival of the nunsploitation subgenre that reached top popularity in the 1970s with essential titles like Mark of the Devil (1970), The Devils (1971), Don’t Deliver Us from Evil (1971), Satanico Pandemonium (1975), and Alucarda (1977), and with the recent titles St. Agatha (2018) and The Nun (2018), a new troubled nuns film is coming out. Perhaps being more a social tale than a horror film, this month we see the release of Agnes (2021).
In it, rumors of demonic possession at a religious convent prompt a church investigation into the strange goings-on among its nuns. A disaffected priest and his neophyte are confronted with temptation, bloodshed, and a crisis of faith.
This is the new movie of writer and director Mickey Reece, an independent filmmaker who has achieved notorious success in the underground circuits with his latest films Broadcast (2016), Mickey Reece’s Alien (2017), and Climate of the Hunter (2019). His frequent collaborator John Selvidge has been the co-writer of the screenplay.
The main cast in Agnes (2021) is formed by Molly C. Quinn, Chris Sullivan, Hayley McFarland, Chris Browning, Rachel True, Jake Horowitz, Zandy Hartig, Ginger Gilmartin, Ben Hall, and Sean Gunn.
After its premiere premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12, 2021, the movie has been present in several film festivals including Fantastic Fest, Fantasia Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, and Philadelphia International Film Festival. Now, it is scheduled for a theatrical and digital release on December 10, 2021, by Magnet Releasing.
