Today one of the most important genre film festivals in the world, the Sitges Film Festival, starts in its 54th edition. This year, Ana Lily Amirpour’s Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (2021) is opening the festival and David Lowery’s The Green Knight (2021) will be the closure film. During the 10 days of the festivals, most of the most important titles of the year like Neill Blomkamp’s Demonic (2021), Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s The Deep House (2021), Julia Ducournau’s Titane (2021), or Tommy Wirkola’s The Trip (2021) will be screened in the idyllic Catalan coast town together with some of the genre surprises of the season like The Sadness (2021), Censor (2021), or Antlers (2021).

Another one of those little jewels that are scheduled to be part of the Sitges Film Festival is the Norwegian horror The Innocents (2021). Entitled De uskyldige in its original language, the movie is set during the bright Nordic summer, where a group of children reveals their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren’t looking. As the headline says, “playtime takes a dangerous turn”.

This is the new movie from writer and director Eskil Vogt, who was the writer of one of the most popular Norwegian horror films of the last years, Thelma (2017), and family drama Louder Than Bombs (2015). He had debuted as the director of a feature film with Sundance and Berlinale awards-winner Blind (2014).

The main cast for The Innocents (2021) is formed by Rakel Lenora Fløttum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad, Sam Ashraf, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Morten Svartveit, Kadra Yusuf, Lisa Tønne, and Irina Eidsvold Tøien.

The Innocents (2021) has already been part of the Cannes Film Festival, Norwegian International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and Zurich Film Festival where it achieved mainly positive opinions. On October 12 will have its screening at the Sitges Film Festival, following its participation in Film Fest Gent in Belgium and Fantasy Filmfest in Germany also this month.
