The fantastic thriller Nightcrawler (2014) became instantly one of the most acclaimed and respected movies of this current decade. The good mix of classic crime films, critique to the sensationalism of today’s press and a few drops of human misery delighted all the movie fans that want something more than mere entertainment when we go to the cinema. Now, its director Dan Gilroy is back with a new title that promises to be blending the genres of thriller and horror which might leave no one indifferent.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) is the title, and it circles around a series of paintings by an unknown artist which are recently discovered, and then a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art. Again, a mixture of genres coming from the mind of the filmmaker who became known for being the writer of popular movies like Freejack (1992), Two for the Money (2005), Real Steel (2011), The Bourne Legacy (2012) and Kong: Skull Island (2017).
Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, who already were part of the cast in Nightcrawler (2014), repeat at the orders of Dan Gilroy again in Velvet Buzzsaw (2019). With them, John Malkovich, Billy Magnussen, Toni Collette, Natalia Dyer, Zawe Ashton, Daveed Diggs, Tom Sturridge, Peter Gadiot, Steven Williams and Pat Healy also star. Filming took place last year in Los Angeles, California.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival the 27th of January. After that, the 1st of February, it will become part of the Netflix Originals catalog. You can watch here its official trailer:
