Prolific and controversial director Sion Sono has signed tens of movies in his homeland. Perhaps his name doesn’t ring a bell, but if you hear he has been behind titles like Love Exposure (2005), Guilty of Romance (2011), Cold Fish (2010), Suicide Club (2002) or the recent Antiporno (2016) [read our review here] then is when the master of grotesque author is set in place.
Prisoners of the Ghostland marks the debut of Sion Sono as a Hollywood filmmaker. It is written by the actors Aaron Hendry and Reza Sixo Safai. The movie, about a notorious criminal who must break an evil curse in order to rescue an abducted girl who has mysteriously disappeared, is currently in pre-production. With a plot like that, and knowing the interest director Sono has in blowing the minds of the audiences off, it is fair to think the supernatural and dark side of the human character will enjoy of a strong presence. Evil beings surrounding Ghostland will make sure to rescue the young lady is not an easy quest for our hero.
If that is not a good enough incentive, our beloved and hated Nicolas Cage will be starring in the movie. He is not foreign in the action thriller or weird fantasy genres, as mark his presence in movies like Face/Off (1997), National Treasure (2004), The Wicker Man (2006), Ghost Rider (2007), Knowing (2009), The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010) or Pay the Ghost (2015) just to name a few. The popular actor, who many might think lost his prestige achieved after winning the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role with the movie Leaving Las Vegas (1995), is focusing to come back to the good path this year starring a bunch of action and thriller titles like Looking Glass (2018), 211 (2018), Between Worlds (2018), Primal (2018), Running with the Devil (2018) and the hard awaited Mady (2018). So many different titles, at least one or two of them must be decent, no?
