What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? This is the start point of BrightBurn (2019), the second movie directed by David Yarovesky, which was written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, the brother and cousin of James Gunn, who is also in the team as a producer.
As one might suspect from the plot made public, this movie takes as a start point the origins of one of the most recognizable characters in comic books as is Superman, but it takes it to the terrain of sole horror. Besides this story detail, BrightBurn (2019) has been declared as being not involved at all with the popular superhero, and neither to be associated with the DC Comics universe in any way. The filmmakers only took the origins idea and built from it a horror movie more focused on the relationship between the family and their supernatural but yet evil son.
Director David Yarovesky has been for a while in the orbit of the Gunn family. His debut film The Hive (2015) included Sean Gunn, brother of James Gunn and star in almost all his movies, as one of the main characters. Also, he was co-director together with James Gunn of that wonderful music video called Guardians of the Galaxy: Inferno (2017), a vehicle for the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) to show off their dancing and disco habilities with David Hasselhoff singing.
