Writer, producer, actor and director Leigh Whannell will probably always be remembered as the co-creator, together with James Wan, of the influential horror movie Saw (2004). The successful tandem he forms with Wan also brought to life the Insidious saga, being Whannell the writer of all the 4 chapters and even debuting as a director with Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015).
This time, his pal James Wan has not been part of the new project, so by the hand of Blumhouse Productions Leigh Whannell has written and directed Upgrade (2018). The movie is set in the near-future, where technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when Grey Trace, a self-identified technophobe, has his world turned upside down due to the murdering of his wife, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant called Stem.
Upgrade (2018) is starred by Logan Marshall-Green, a popular face in science fiction and horror movies such as Devil (2010), Prometheus (2012) and The Invitation (2015). With him, Simon Maiden, Christopher Kirby, Sachin Joab, Clayton Jacobson, Benedict Hardie, Harrison Gilbertson, Betty Gabriel, Michael M. Foster and Melanie Vallejo complete the main cast.
This action science fiction movie has been rated R for strong violence, grisly images, and language. And after watching this second trailer one can’t think but get back to memory that amazing hell of a ride that Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) is, but upgraded with some science-fiction elements –no pun intended–. Lots of fights, violence, car chases and a brutal display of adrenaline. Upgrade (2018) premiered successfully this past month at South by Southwest Film Festival, where it became the winner of the Midnighters Audience Award. With this referent, once can already add this title to the wanna-see of the year!
