In the past years, we have had the presence of a bunch of action films that are something else than dumb fights car chases and gunshots. Thanks to titles like John Wick (2014), Hardcore Henry (2015) or The Raid (2011). With the permission of John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), many voices point that Atomic Blonde (2017) will be the action title of the year. The movie premiered last month at South by Southwest Film Festival and the opinions were unanimously positive.
Taken from the plot summary by producers Focus Features, Atomic Blonde (2017) tells the story of “the crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone to Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies”.
The film is the debut feature of veteran stunt artist David Leitch, who has shared his fight abilities in titles like Blade (1998) or Ghosts of Mars (2001), being the stunts and choreographies coordinator in The Mechanic (2011), Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), or Ninja Assassin (2009), and being the double for Brad Pitt in Fight Club (1999), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Ocean’s Eleven (2001) or Troy (2004) among others. Undoubtedly, he knows what we are talking about in the terms of action flicks.
The screenplay is written by Kurt Johnstad based on the graphic novel series created by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart. Sofia Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, John Goodman and Toby Jones are some of the actors who join stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy in this high octane thriller.
July in the USA and August almost everywhere else in the world will be when we will have the chance to enjoy the adventures of Agent Lorraine Broughton, and see if the blonde spy gets a place in our hearts. And honestly, from what we see in the second official trailer, this sounds like a highly possible thing to happen. Watch it here:
