Without a doubt, Knives Out (2019) became one of the best surprises in the crime and thriller genre of the last few years. With a delicious Agatha Christie style, and yet updated to the present times, the movie achieved big praise. And its premise was as simple as elaborated, like a game of Cluedo in a motion picture. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.
The movie starred Daniel Craig as the fancy Detective Benoit Blanc in an astonishing cast that also included Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, and Christopher Plummer.
Soon after its release, and due to the big popularity it achieved, Netflix announced that they achieved the intellectual rights for the movie and they would be producing two more films in the Knives Out universe. And Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) is the first one of them.
Daniel Craig returns as Benoit Blanc, and this time he must travel to Greece for his latest case. Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case.
This new adventure is also plagued with A-class stars. Edward Norton is Miles Bron, a tech billionaire, Janelle Monáe is Cassandra “Andi” Brand, a tech entrepreneur, Kathryn Hahn is Claire Debella, a Connecticut governor running for Senate, Leslie Odom Jr. is Lionel Toussaint, a scientist who works for Miles, Jessica Henwick is Peg, Birdie’s assistant, Madelyn Cline is Whiskey, Duke’s younger girlfriend and channel assistant, Kate Hudson is Birdie Jay, a fashion designer, and Dave Bautista is Duke Cody, a YouTube star. Ethan Hawke also stars.
As in Knives Out (2019) and the upcoming second sequel scheduled for 2024, Rian Johnson is the writer, director, and also producer of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) via his banner T-Street. His are also the fans’ favorites Brick (2005), The Brothers Bloom (2008), Looper (2012), and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017).
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022, and is scheduled to be released in select cinemas in November 2022, before its streaming release on December 23, 2022, by Netflix.
