Former YouTuber Joe Penna, the winner in 2012 of the Gold Creator Award by YouTube, is back with another feature film that has arisen big expectations. After his debut feature film, the very solid and exciting Arctic (2018) [read our review], and the thriller TV series Release (2020), his newest film is a science-fiction called Stowaway (2021), where a mission to Mars sets off a series of unintended consequences.
In the movie, the crew of a spaceship (one in a Mars cycler’s orbit) headed to Mars discovers an accidental stowaway shortly after takeoff. Too far from Earth to turn back and with resources quickly dwindling, the ship’s medical researcher emerges as the only dissenting voice against the group consensus that has already decided in favor of a grim outcome.
Stowaway (2021) is starring Anna Kendrick, known for her roles in the Twilight and Pitch Perfect sagas, who has always taken part in End of Watch (2012), The Voices (2014), Into the Woods (2014), and The Accountant (2016), and Toni Collette, who needs no introduction after her unforgettable roles in The Sixth Sense (1999), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Krampus (2015), Hereditary (2018), and Knives Out (2019). Together with them, Daniel Dae Kim and Shamier Anderson also star.
Joe Penna has directed the movie with a script written by him and his frequent collaborator Ryan Morrison, who also serves as the editor of the film.
In December 2020, Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film for most regions, with Prime Video having distribution rights for Canada. The film is set to release on April 22, 2021. Here you can watch the trailer for Stowaway (2021).
