The Hepta Group is a real Spanish team formed by professionals of several disciplines dedicated to the fields of paranormal phenomena. It was created in 1987 by Father José María Pilón following the guidelines of this kind of investigation occurring in the United States. Coming from different academic backgrounds and activities, all the members of the group share an interest in parapsychological events. The variety of its members brings a wide point of view to the cases they work on, and it has a positive reputation not only in Spain but also internationally.
Netflix has produced the movie Phenomena (2023), also known as Fenómenas in the original Spanish language, inspired by the real Hepta Group. In the movie, three middle-aged women who investigate paranormal events are put to the test when their leader Father Pilón disappears.
The director of the movie has been Carlos Therón, one of the most prolific filmmakers in Spain responsible for silly comedies like Fuga de Cerebros 2 (2011), Impávido (2012), It’s for Your Own Good (2017), I Can Quit Whenever I Want (2019), and Operación Camarón (2021), some episodes in the popular comedy-thriller TV series Los hombres de Paco (2005–), and the hit comedy series Mira lo que has hecho (2018–2020). The screenplay has been written by Marta Buchaca, who has a wide experience in TV series and films, and Fernando Navarro, who has been behind the texts for some of the most notorious Spanish horror and thriller movies including Spy Time (2015), Toro (2016), Verónica (2017), Muse (2017), A Perfect Enemy (2020), Below Zero (2021), or Venus (2022).
The main cast in Phenomena (2023) is formed by Belén Rueda, Ivan Massagué, Miren Ibarguren, Toni Acosta, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, Gracia Olayo, Antonio Pagudo, and Lorena López
