A group of kids get together in the woods and tell ghost stories. This was the basic premise for the 1990s TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990–2000). A family oriented show where fantasy and mild horror entertained for a decade the audiences that were too young or scared to watch other shows like Tales from the Crypt (1989–1996) or the Creepshow segment movies.
Creepy, but never gory or excessively frightening, common subjects included haunted houses, what goes on behind the neighbor’s walls, and other things that go bump in the night. That is how the group of kids calling themselves “The Midnight Society” spent each episode sitting around a campfire swapping scary stories. Do you remember the show? (In fact I don’t, to be honest. My bad….)
On November 13, 2017, it was announced that a film adaptation of the series was in the works at via Paramount Pictures. It (2017) writer Gary Dauberman is set to write the screenplay with Matt Kaplan producing. The film is scheduled to be released on October 11, 2019.
