Just imagine, you are at the funeral of a deceased loved one, sobbing, and grieving, and devastated by the loss of that person, and then, one of a sudden, that loved one wakes up and starts to walk. Is that a miracle or a curse? Is that a good thing or something terrifying you should run from? That is a taste of the premise of horror Godforsaken (2020).
The movie centers on an indie filmmaker who visits his hometown to attend a childhood friend’s funeral. When she seemingly rises from the dead during her wake with mysterious abilities, he and a group of friends begin to investigate and record the town’s experience as they try to get to the truth. Some claim she is God; some claim she is pure evil. They soon learn that not all miracles are holy.
This is the new feature film of Afghanistan-born Canadian filmmaker Ali Akbar Akbar Kamal after the action film Faceless (2016). About Godforsaken (2020) he stated “growing up in a religious community in the middle east, I always had a fascination with otherworldly beings. As a child, I would often hear things like ‘You will burn for eternity if you commit a sin’ or ‘you will go blind if you question God’. All of which struck terror in my heart. As a horror fan, I always found that feeling of terror to be captivating. The fear of unknown beings that hold unlimited power over us. I wrote Godforsaken (2020) with that fear in mind. Our objective was to make a movie that touches on those feelings but most importantly I wanted to make something that was fun and exciting to watch“.
Chad Tailor, Mélie B. Rondeau, Katie Fleming, Domenic Derose, Nicole Fairbairn, Chris Kelly, JoAnn Bundock, Flora Burke, Dan Bieman, and Pat Raftis form the main cast.
Godforsaken (2020) was part of the Molins Horror Film Festival on October 31, 2020. Now, it had its premiere on the Terror Films Channel on March 25, 2022, followed by a worldwide digital release on April 8, 2022.
