So far, everything involved in the new Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen (2018), sounds promising. The fact of choosing director Neil Marshall, responsible of the very interesting The Descent (2005) and Dog Soldiers (2002), was already good news. Original Hellboy creator Mike Mignola being involved in the project was supposed to be a must thing to do. And the announcement of the film aiming to an R-rate is something basic, to say the least for the fans. And about the cast, together with the already confirmed David Harbour as Hellboy and Ian McShane as Professor Trevor Broom, we are about to add horror and action superstar Milla Jovovich to the list. Because yesterday it was known that she is about to sign for the movie to take the role of the villain The Blood Queen.
The Queen of Blood, previously known as Nimue and the Lady of the Lake was the greatest of all British witches. According to the original Hellboy comics, she lived during the reign of King Arthur and was beloved by Merlin, who told her all of his secrets. She used this knowledge to imprison him in a grave for eternity. But without Merlin to guide her, Nimue‘s knowledge of magic drove her to madness and eventually to worship the Ogdru Jahad. Her madness was so great that all the other witches killed her, cut her into many pieces and scattered them all over the earth. However, the pieces would always rejoin, so the witches shut them into a wooden box and buried it deep within the earth. Centuries later, the Queen of Blood arises and Hellboy is the only one powerful enough to avoid her to destroy the world as we know it.
The production of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen (2018) is about to start. Producer Aron Coleite is supervising the final drafts of the script penned by Andrew Cosby together with Mignola himself and Christopher Golden. The filming might start as soon as director Neil Marshall ends with his current project, the pilot episode for Netflix’s upcoming TV series Lost in Space (2018– ).
