So the story says writer and director Ti West and his lead actress Mia Goth got so attached to her character of Pearl in the movie X (2022) that they decided to dig deeper into it and develop her prequel entitled Pearl (2022).
The original movie X (2022) was set in 1979, where a group of adult movie actors and a small film crew arrive at a farmhouse occupied by an elderly couple in the desolate Texas countryside to film an adult movie. As the day shifts to night, the visitors slowly realize that they are not safe, and are being targeted by a nearby enemy.
Mia Goth played aspiring starlet Maxine Minx, one of the performers there to shoot a porno film titled, “The Farmer’s Daughter”. But she also plays Pearl, the wife of the farm owner. Before filming begins, Maxine meets Pearl, who appears to try and make a pass at her.
The upcoming slasher Pearl (2022) goes deeper into the origin of the character. Set during World War I in 1918, it explores the origins of Pearl. The events take place prior to the previous film and explore how the cabin, where the “massacre of X” takes place, was once used as a boarding house during the war.
Ti West, who has worked almost all his career in horror films, is known for The Roost (2005), Trigger Man (2007), The House of the Devil (2009), Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009), The Innkeepers (2011), and segments in the popular horror anthologies V/H/S (2012) and The ABCs of Death (2012). He is also the director of both X (2022) and Pearl (2022). As Ti West was the writer for X (2022), Mia Goth has been the author of the screenplay for Pearl (2022).
Always intriguing by her delicate aspect but also for a good eye in order to choose intense characters, Mia Goth is known for her roles in the movies Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013), The Survivalist (2015), A Cure for Wellness (2016), Suspiria (2018), and High Life (2018). Together with her, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro also star in Pearl (2022).
The movie will premiere this September at the Venice Film Festival, and will later be released in theaters. A24 is producing and distributing the film.
