Kidnapped and trapped in an elevator, a young girl discovers her powers in "Ascendant"

In the style of young adult sagas like Divergent or The Hunger Games, where the young protagonists have to learn they have powers and abilities beyond the rest of the people, here comes another movie that might not have the epic setup as the previously mentioned titles but it sure looks like an entertaining trip, Ascendant (2021).

In the movie, a young woman wakes trapped and kidnapped in an elevator of a super high rise building at the mercy of her tormentors. This stylistic thriller, set in Shanghai, explores a young woman’s instinct to survive in a situation out of her control. Trapped, without any form of escape, and cocooned in the belly of the beast, Aria is forced to adapt her thinking, her beliefs, and her endurance. This is the first of the journeys that assault her mind and her senses, pinning her down in anguish only to emerge connected to abilities that define who she truly is.

Ascendant (2021) is written, produced, and directed by Antaine Furlong, being this his debut feature film. It is starring Charlotte Best, Jonny Pasvolsky, Susan Prior, Andrew Jack, Lily Stewart, Tahlia Sturzaker, Elsa Cocquerel, and Karelina Clarke. Kieron Holland is the co-writer of the screenplay.

This Australian production is out in theaters today in Oceanic country. Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired worldwide distribution rights for the film. Here you can watch its official trailer for Ascendant (2021).
