David Koepp has been one of the most attractive screenwriters in Hollywood since the 1990s, having taken part in iconic movies like Jurassic Park (1993), Carlito’s Way (1993), Mission: Impossible (1996), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Snake Eyes (1998), Panic Room (2002) or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002). As a director he has also been responsible of a handful of titles that might not have had the cultural impact of his screenplays directed by other filmmakers, but yet they remain as enjoyable genre pieces including titles like The Trigger Effect (1996), Stir of Echoes (1999), Secret Window (2004) and Premium Rush (2012).
You Should Have Left (2020) is the new movie directed and written for the screen by David Koepp. It is based on a novel written by German writer Daniel Kehlmann, which marks his first English-language adaptation for the screen. The movie centers a screenwriter who travels to a remote house in the Alps with his family so that he can write the sequel to his big hit film, but he begins to regret his decision after suffering from a severe case of writer’s block.
In the movie, Theo Conroy is a successful middle-aged man whose marriage to his much younger actress wife, Susanna, is shredding at the seams, frayed by her secretiveness, his jealousy, and the shadow of his past. In an effort to repair their relationship, Theo and Susanna book a vacation at a stunning, remote modern home in the Welsh countryside for themselves and their six-year-old daughter, Ella. What at first seems like a perfect retreat distorts into a perfect nightmare when Theo’s grasp on reality begins to unravel and he suspects that a sinister force within the house knows more than he or Susanna have revealed, even to each other.
You Should Have Left (2020) is starred by Kevin Bacon, who was already the main protagonist in David Koepp’s second film as a director Stir of Echoes (1999), and Amanda Seyfried. Together with them, Colin Blumenau, Eli Powers, Avery Tiiu Essex, Lowri Ann Richards, and Joshua C Jackson also star.
Filming for You Should Have Left (2020) took place at various locations in Wales, including at the Life House in Llanbister, Radnorshire. It has been produced by Jason Blum via Blumhouse Productions. Initial plans consisted of a theatrical release, although the chaotic current situation forced the movie to be rescheduled for a video on demand release on June 18, 2020, by Universal Pictures.
