Lots have been talked about the long awaited reboot of The Crow. The character based on the comics by James O’Barr of the same name already had a series of movie adaptations which started with the cult classic The Crow (1994), directed by a then unknown Alex Proyas. But apparently, we won’t have to wait much more because Sony has taken control of the project. Corin Hardy, who is now finishing his current project The Nun (2018), seems to be the chosen director for this new adaptation.
The current script for the movie is written by musician and novelist Nick Cave, based on a concept story of his own. That is not the first time the musician comes up with the script for a fiction movie, his are also the texts for John Hillcoat’s Lawless (2012) and The Proposition (2005). And, seriously, who else could be in charge of writing a story such dark, spiritual, vengeful and musical like The Crow?
The plot for the original comic books revolves around an unfortunate young man called Eric Draven. He and his fiancée, Shelly, are assaulted by a gang of street thugs after their car breaks down. Eric is shot in the head and is paralyzed, and can only watch as Shelly is savagely beaten, raped, and also shot in the head. After the couple is left for dead on the side of the road, Eric is resurrected by a crow and seeks vengeance on the murderers, methodically stalking and killing them.
Besides the epic romantic and gothic of the story, it all achieved an unquestionable cult status when Brandon Lee, the star for the first film adaptation The Crow (1994), was accidentally killed on the filming set when a stunt using a revolver with dummy cartridges went fatal. Lee was lethally hit in the abdomen and died at the hospital after 6 hours of surgery. This fatal accident aside, The Crow (1994) was a great film which marked an entire generation and started the goth and emo subculture worldwide. And although it’s not officially stated yet, Jason Momoa is almost surely going to be the chosen one to play the role of Eric Draven. That is when he is done with the filming of his current blockbuster, Aquaman (2018).
