James Franco directs himself, Milla Jovovich and Lucy Liu in "Future World"

James Franco is better known for the big audiences for his roles as an actor, being the star in films like Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), Spring Breakers (2012), Pineapple Express (2008), An American Crime (2007), and being part of the new rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. But although his face is one of the most recognizable and respected on the screen, not many people know he is as well an accomplished producer and film writer, and also is credited for around 40 direction credits, including music videos, documentaries, short films and features. Perhaps his most notable movie as director is the recent The Disaster Artist (2017), which he also stars, but by far it is not the only one.

Although James Franco’s works as a director are normally in the areas of dramas and thrillers, one of the titles he has finished this year is a science fiction action western entitled Future World (2018). The movie is co-directed by Bruce Thierry Cheung, Franco’s habitual cinematographer and collaborator who also co-authored the script together with Jeremy Cheung and Jay Davis (another habitual in James Franco’s projects).

Future World (2018) tells the story of a young boy from a wealthy family in a futuristic wasteland that searches for a rumored cure for his dying mother. Together with his loyal bodyguard they undertake a quest into an unknown post-apocalyptic world with nothing but a minuscule hope to find a medicine that nobody even knows it exists. The strange and hazardous wilderness won’t be their only dangers, for they will have to face all sorts of unfriendly enemies Mad Max style.

Together with James Franco, other stars like Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Suki Waterhouse, Margarita Levieva, Method Man, Elisha Henig, Snoop Dogg, Scott Haze, Carmen Argenziano, Destiny Austin, Wilmer Calderon, Brandon Stewart, Jeffrey Wahlberg and Tamzin Brown are part of the main cast.

Future World (2018) will be distributed in the USA by Lionsgate and is scheduled to have a theatrical the 25th of May. The worldwide release of the movie is still unknown. Perhaps it will end up as part of some streaming catalog like Netflix as it’s happening lately? We don’t know yet, but what we do have here is the official trailer of the movie:
