With the original title of Den skyldige, and known internationally as The Guilty (2018), this Danish crime thriller achieved a wide collection of awards and nominations in many international film festivals in 2018 and 2019. And, as happens often in cases like this, the Hollywood machinery didn’t waste much time to borrow the idea and make the English language remake.

And, as it happened in the original film, The Guilty (2021) takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Bayler, a demoted police officer, tries to save a caller kidnapped woman in grave danger—but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.

The main star of the movie is Jake Gyllenhaal, a regular in intense thrillers that have been starring in Donnie Darko (2001), Zodiac (2007), Source Code (2011), End of Watch (2012), and Nightcrawler (2014). Together with him, Christina Vidal and Adrian Martinez also star and are accompanied by the voices of Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Eli Goree, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Paul Dano, Peter Sarsgaard, Christiana Montoya, David Castañeda, Beau Knapp, Edi Patterson, Gillian Zinser, Bill Burr, Dillon Lane, and Marlene Forte.

The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua, an experienced filmmaker and one of the best thriller films directors of the last decades being behind titles like Training Day (2001), Tears of the Sun (2003), Shooter (2007), The Equalizer (2014) and its sequel The Equalizer 2 (2018), and The Magnificent Seven (2016). The screenplay has been written by Nic Pizzolatto, known for being the creator of the hit TV series True Detective (2014–2019), based on the original Danish screenplay written by Gustav Möller and Emil Nygaard Albertsen.
