Laxmii (2020) is a Hindi language new remake of popular Indian horror-comedy Kanchana: Muni 2 (2011), where a fearful youngster gets possessed by a ghost and starts behaving weirdly. The original film was in Tamil language, and it previously had two other remakes Kalpana (2012) in Kannada language, and Maya 3D (2016) in Sinhala language.
With an original working title Laxmii Bomb, the movie centers on Asif, a man who does not believe in ghosts and warns people not falling into traps. He tells people that if he saw a ghost then he will wear bangles. He lives with his wife Rashmi and his late brother’s son named Shaan. They were invited to Rashmi’s parents’ (Sachin and Ratna) house on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary. Rashmi’s father does not like Rashmi and Asif as Rashmi ran away with him and married without her parents’ permission. On arriving, Asif and his family faced an accident but no one was hurt. When they reached the house, Rashmi’s father still hated Asif and Rashmi while Ratna did like them. They met Rashmi’s brother Deepak and his wife Ashwani. Once Asif, Shaan, and some other children went to a ground that was believed to be haunted and is avoided by many people but Asif thinks otherwise. While he was putting the stumps into the ground, the stumps hit a body buried in the ground.
Laxmii (2020) marks the debut as a director of the choreographer and actor Lawrence Raghavendra, with the help of second-unit director Balakrishnan Thevar here sharing the co-director credit. Raghavendra has also been the writer of the screenplay, together with Farhad Samji, Sparsh Khetarpal, and Tasha Bhambra. Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sharad Kelkar, Aryan Preet, and Manu Rishi Chadha form the main cast.
Laxmii (2020) was planned to be one of the hit titles for the summer season in India with the planned release on 22 May, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatrical exhibition of the film has been impossible. On 29 June 2020, Disney+ Hotstar announced they would release the film, which came out globally on 9 November 2020, near Diwali, one of the most important festivities in India.
