Is Sylvester Stallone passing the torch to Jason Statham as the leader of The Expendables? As a lover of the 1980s and 1990s action flicks it is kind of sad to see the action star stepping out of the saga he created, but time passes for everyone and the list of new names added to the crew of outlaw mercenaries is exciting enough to trust the fun can still hold most spectacularly.
In Expend4bles (2023), also known as The Expendables 4, the group of underground assets is assigned on a mission to stop Suarto, who runs a terrorist organization, from smuggling nuclear warheads that will ignite a conflict between Russia and the U.S.
The Indonesian action star and martial artist Iko Uwais, the protagonist of the already iconic films The Raid: Redemption (2011), The Raid 2 (2014), Headshot (2016), and The Night Comes for Us (2018), and also starring in Man of Tai Chi (2013), Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), Mile 22 (2018), Triple Threat (2019), Snake Eyes (2021), and Fistful of Vengeance (2022), plays here the bad guy. A bad guy that, for sure, will be hard to kill and promises lots of spectacular fights.
Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, Dolph Lundgren as Gunner Jensen, Randy Couture as Toll Road, and Sylvester Stallone as Barney Ross are the classic heavy nucleus of the Expendables crew. With them, Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body (2009)), Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson (Escape Plan (2013)), Tony Jaa (the Ong-Bak saga), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life (2020)), Levy Tran (The First Purge (2018)), Nicole Andrews (Leatherface (2017)), Sheila Shah (Saw V (2008)), and Andy Garcia complete the main cast.
Scott Waugh, a former stunts artist who directed the action titles Act of Valor (2012) and Need for Speed (2014) has been chosen as the director for Expend4bles (2023). Kurt Wimmer (Sphere (1998), Equilibrium (2002), Total Recall (2012), Point Break (2015)), Max Adams (Heist (2015), Extraction (2015), Precious Cargo (2016)), and Tad Daggerhart (Black Lotus (2023)) have been the writers of the screenplay.
Expend4bles (2023) is Rated R for strong/bloody violence throughout, language, and sexual material. It might not have the hook a film like this had a decade ago, but it is still expected to be one of the hits of the post-summer season. Distributed by Lionsgate, the movie is scheduled for a theatrical release internationally on September 22, 2023.
