“A mother’s love never dies”, is the headline of the official poster of the supernatural horror movie Umma (2022). A sentence that is full of care and warmth, that must keep you safe at all times, unless it is used for something evil and wicked until the “never dies” part chases you forever, wherever you go.

Umma, which is the Korean word for “mother”, gives you a hint of the path the plot will take. The movie centers on Amanda, a Korean immigrant, and her daughter living on a rural farm, raising bees, and living without modern technology. When Amanda receives the cremated ashes of her estranged mother, it unleashes a vicious spirit intent on taking her body for itself.

This is the debut feature film of writer and director Iris K. Shim, a filmmaker known for her awards-winner documentary The House of Suh (2010), a chilling exploration of the tragic history of the Suh family and the murder that they were involved in.

Umma (2022) is starring Canadian-Korean Sandra Oh, popular for her roles in Sideways (2004), Hard Candy (2005), and Defendor (2009). Fivel Stewart, MeeWha Alana Lee, Tom Yi, Odeya Rush, and Dermot Mulroney also star.

The movie is produced by Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi, with André Øverdal (Trollhunter (2010), The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)) as executive producer.

The movie is coming out in theaters on March 18, 2022, in the USA, and on March 25, 2022, in the UK by Sony Pictures Releasing. For other territories, we will have to wait for upcoming dates.
