The Invitation (2022) could be easily considered a very different look at the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker and published in 1897 – and probably the most important story in the genre of horror with the permission of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The official plot might sound vague, but once one digs deeper into the story a few attractive layers are shown. The movie centers on a young woman who is courted and swept off her feet, only to realize a gothic conspiracy is afoot.
After the death of her mother and having no other known relatives, Evie takes a DNA test and discovers a long-lost cousin she never knew she had. Invited by her newfound family to a lavish wedding in the English countryside, she’s at first seduced by the sexy aristocrat host but is soon thrust into a nightmare of survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history and the unsettling intentions behind their sinful generosity.
This is the new movie of Jessica M. Thompson, also the executive producer, who has gained some notoriety after her awards-winner debut The Light of the Moon (2017). Blair Butler, the writer of Hell Fest (2018) and Polaroid (2019), has been the author of the screenplay.
The main cast for The Invitation (2022) is formed by Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty, Stephanie Corneliussen, Alana Boden, Sean Pertwee, Hugh Skinner, Virág Bárány, Courtney Taylor, and Jeremy Wheeler.
The movie is Rated PG-13 for terror, violent content, some strong language, sexual content, and partial nudity.
The Invitation (2022) was released in theaters on August 26 in Germany, Canada, France, Australia, Ireland, Norway, the UK, and the USA among other territories with Sony Pictures Releasing distributing. On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has had mixed reviews with comments like “despite a very likable lead and a refreshingly light touch, The Invitation (2022) is ultimately too predictable to thrill as either a romance or a horror story”.
