Beware, because this could be a too sordid one for some viewers, since Jaula (2022), internationally named The Chalk Line, is inspired by the case of Josef Fritzl who kept his daughter, Elisabeth, imprisoned for 24 years.
The movie centers on Paula and her husband as they are coming back from dinner when they suddenly find a young girl wandering around on the high road. Two weeks later, after seeing that no one is claiming her back, the two decide to let her stay in at their home temporarily, and so give a twist to their love life in the process. But it won’t be that easy, since the girl lives obsessed with the fantasy that a monster will come out and punish her if she ever steps out of a chalk square painted on the floor. After the strong bond created between the two, Paula beings a road down a dark path to try and discover the girl’s enigmatic past.
This is the debut feature film of Ignacio Tatay, also co-writer of the screenplay together with Isabel Peña, an awards-winner writer and frequent collaborator of director Rodrigo Sorogoyen who has been behind the texts of popular Spanish thriller-oriented films Stockholm (2013), May God Save Us (2016), The Candidate (2018), Mother (2019), The Beasts (2022), and the TV series Antidisturbios (2020).
The main star of the film is Elena Anaya, an awards-winner actress who besides starring in popular Spanish productions like Fragile (2005), Room in Rome (2010), and The Skin I Live In (2011) has also been in international action films like Van Helsing (2004) and Wonder Woman (2017). Pablo Molinero, Eva Tennear, Eva Llorach, Carlos Santos, Esther Acebo, Eloy Azorín, and Mona Martínez complete the cast.
Jaula (2022) had a theatrical release in Spain on September 9, 2022, and it is part of the Netflix catalog as The Chalk Line (2022) since October 24, 2022.
