Horror anthology "Satanic Hispanics" premiers at Fantasy Fest

A last-minute surprise for the Fantasy Fest this year, Satanic Hispanics (2022). As the organization of the festival admits, “there is always that one movie at Fantastic Fest that comes in when you have almost locked your program. The one that irritates you because it has come so late but, at the same time, excites you because you know the directors’ work and you don’t want to miss out on their new projects. What a joy and relief it is when it turns out the wait was worthwhile. I guarantee that you’ll leave the theater with a big smile on your face”. With a promising premise like this, let’s see what the movie has to offer.

Satanic Hispanics (2022) starts with a police raid that uncovers a mysterious man chained up in a locked room. This mysterious man, who only refers to himself as The Traveler, leads us through the four stories.

The stories are tied together by Mike Mendez (The Gravedancers (2006), Big Ass Spider! (2013), The Last Heist (2016), and Don’t Kill It (2016)) and conducted by The Traveler played by Efren Ramirez. The four segments are “También lo vi”, by the debutant Demian Rugna, about a man who sees something in his house, “El Vampiro”, by the also debutant Ed Sanchez, which is a hilarious revisit of the vampire myth, “Nahuales”, by Gigi Saul Guerrero, winner of several awards with her short films El Gigante (2014), Madre De Dios (2015), and Bestia (2017), who takes us on a creepy journey into the Nahuales culture, and the funny and yet scary “Hammer of the Zanzibar”, by Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead (2011), the horror anthologies ABCs of Death 2 (2014) and Nightmare Cinema (2018), and the From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series (2014–2016) TV series).

The cast of the film is formed of Sonya Eddy, Ari Gallegos, Greg Grunberg, Pedro Joaquín, Hemky Madera, Victoria Maurette, Daniela Medeiros, Jonah Ray, Christian Rodrigo, Jacob Vargas, and Patricia Velasquez among others.

Satanic Hispanics (2022) had its world premiere in Fantasy Fest on Sunday, September 25, 2022, and is having screenings until Tuesday, September 27.
