LandLocked (2022) is a horror and fantasy film, incorporating actual found footage in the form of childhood home movies, that features a cast of real-life family members playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The end result is a unique combination of documentary and narrative filmmaking, which has been adored by critics on the festival circuit.
The movie centers on Mason, who summoned to his soon-to-be demolished childhood home as he discovers an old video camera that can see into the past, driving him to record as many memories as possible before the doomed house is destroyed.
Utilizing the director’s own home movies, filming in the actual locations where he spent his youth, and casting real-life family members to play fictionalized versions of themselves, LandLocked (2022) combines narrative and documentary with horror and sci-fi, taking ten years to complete, to create a movie unlike any other.
This is the new movie of editor, writer, and director Paul Owens, debuting with a fiction feature film after his documentaries Penny Arcade: The Series (2009), Amnesia Fortnight (2012), Minecraft: The Story of Mojang (2012), Double Fine Adventure (2012), and The Amnesia Fortnight Movie (2021).
Paul Owens, Jeffrey Owens, Mason Owens, and Seth Owens form the main cast.
The movie was part of the Chattanooga Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, and Nightstream, where it has been quoted as “one of the most intriguing films to come out” by Daily Dead and a “remarkable lo-fi creeper” by Fangoria.
Dark Sky Films has scheduled LandLocked (2022) for a release on digital platforms and some selected theaters on January 6, 2023.
