If home invasion movies are on the list of your favorite horror and thriller subgenres, you should take a look at the movie Barbarians (2021).
Set over the course of twenty-four hours, the movie sees couple Adam and Eva wake up in their supposed dream house on Adam’s birthday. Lucas, a property developer and friend of the couple, arrives for dinner with his actress girlfriend Chloe, to celebrate Adam’s birthday and the couple’s buying of the house. But secrets unravel over dinner, and when the doorbell rings the evening takes a nightmarish turn. As manners give way to madness, an idyllic evening of celebration descends into a dark night of terror; and the group’s civilized dinner party turns out to be anything but.
This is the debut feature film of Charles Dorfman, a filmmaker who has been the producer of a good collection of popular films including The King’s Speech (2010), Satanic Panic (2019), Rabid (2019), The Fanatic (2019), VFW (2019), Disturbing the Peace (2020), Boys from County Hell (2020), Honest Thief (2020), Death of Me (2020), and The Lost Daughter (2021). He has also been the writer of the screenplay based on a story by Statten Roeg.
The main cast for Barbarians (2021) is formed by Oscar-nominated for Maria Full of Grace (2004) Catalina Sandino Moreno, Tom Cullen, Iwan Rheon, Will Kemp, and Inès Spiridonov.
The movie had its premiere at the Fantastic Fest on September 29, 2021. After that, it was part of other film festivals including Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival and Fantasy Filmfest. Now, it is scheduled for a theatrical and digital release by IFC Midnight on April 1, 2022.
