As it is some sort of macabre Cinderella story, at once hilarious and genuinely disturbing, I Blame Society (2020) is a razor-sharp satire and warped version of the life story of its writer, director, and star Gillian Wallace Horvat in the pitfalls of post-#MeToo culture in Los Angeles.
Gillian Wallace Horvat, the winner of the SXSW Grand Jury Award for her short film Kiss Kiss Fingerbang (2015), is the co-writer and director of the movie, with Chase Williamson, known for the horror titles Cabaret of the Dead (2017), Artik (2019), and Greenlight (2019) being also the co-writer and associate producer. They both play the main protagonists of the movie.
In it, Gillian is one of those many struggling filmmakers in L.A. who just can’t seem to get the money for their first feature. Feeling like her friends and her partner are losing faith in her abilities, she decides to resurrect her abandoned documentary based on a pseudo-compliment she once received that she would make a good murderer. But while she documents what makes “the perfect murder” a hitherto unseen dark side of Gillian emerges and grows. Furthermore the problem with being a successful serial killer, she discovers, is keeping the whole thing stealth, denying her the recognition that she craves… and that unhinges her even more. After accidentally-ish killing her best friend Chase, Gillian goes on a killing spree culminating with a final bloody act that nobody would dare deny her credit for.
Besides Gillian Wallace Horvat and Chase Williamson, the cast of I Blame Society (2020) is completed with Macon Blair, an habitual in horror and comedy related American independent films, Keith Poulson, Jennifer Kim, Garrett Coffey, Bobby Naderi, Devon Graye, and Chris Doubek.
I Blame Society (2020) has been present in some film festivals like International Film Festival Rotterdam, Maryland Film Festival, Calgary Underground Film Festival, Eastern Oregon Film Festival, Hofer Filmtage, and Indie Memphis Film Fest, and has a nomination for the Film Independent Spirit Award. Horror-related streaming platform Shudder is releasing the movie on February 8, 2022.
