FX hired Alex Garland to work on the pilot of sci-fi thriller "Devs"

Recently, Deadline.com revealed that TV platform FX, the adult-oriented channel from 21st Century Fox, has ordered filmmaker Alex Garland to be in charge of the pilot for science fiction thriller Devs. The pilot will be also developed by Garland’s frequent collaborators DNA TV and Scott Rudin Productions.

The storyline of Devs is about a young computer engineer, Lily, who investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend. Alex Garland has been hired to write the script for the pilot and also take care of the direction. It will serve as a TV Movie and depends on the audience impact might develop into more episodes.

In the words of Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, “Devs is a captivating series from Alex Garland, building on his track record of groundbreaking work that challenges our notion of humanity amid the seemingly boundless promise of technology”. This is surely a good addition to the channel programming, that already includes series like Legion (2017– ), Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014), American Horror Story (2011– ) and Fargo (2014– ).

Alex Garland was already a novelist when he started his career in the movies industry. The first 3 feature films based on his stories, The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later… (2002) and Sunshine (2007), came by the hand of director Danny Boyle. Always with strong in the science fiction genre, his next adapted screenplays were for the drama Never Let Me Go (2010) and amazing violent adrenaline Dredd (2012). When he decided to also move to film direction, his next 2 projects became some of the most interesting science fiction titles of the decade: Ex Machina (2014) –read our review here– and the recently bought by Netflix Annihilation (2018) –read our review here–. Now, already belonging to the league of unmissable directors, Devs becomes instantly one of the upcoming TV projects to be excitedly expecting.
