Sounds like big studios can’t think of anything but remakes nowadays. Yesterday the news for a new film that is scheduled to be rebooted hit the internet when Deadline published the exclusive that filmmaker J.D. Dillard was in talks with FOX to lead the new version of The Fly. It is still unknown if the direction of the new movie will follow David Cronenberg’s version The Fly (1986), will focus more in Kurt Neumann’s classic The Fly (1958), will be based in original George Langelaan’s short story, or if it will be a totally new approach.
From all of the mentioned, probably David Cronenberg’s version of The Fly (1986) is what the audiences have more present in their minds. And not only because it’s the most recent of its adaptations, remember it had a sequel The Fly II (1989), which is not a bad movie itself but couldn’t have the impact of its predecessor. The man also known as “king of Body Horror” managed to release an extremelly disturbing love story memorably starred by Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Love for science and horror, I must say. What a romance.
J.D. Dillard was responsable of one of the biggest attractions in Sundance 2016 with his science fiction film debut Sleight (2016). At the moment, he is in pre-production with his second title Sweetheart, expected to come out later this year 2017. So if he is finally the chosen one to be responsable of this new version of The Fly, it is to assume he will also be in charge of the script together with his long time co-writer Alex Theurer.
In any case, all these are only speculations and negotiations, we will have to wait for the final outcome. In the meanwhile, let’s remember David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986) trailer:
