Nicolas Cage is an icon. No, it’s not a question and neither a debate. It is a fucking statement. Maybe the most iconic icon right now. Why? Well, he has transcended from movies into many other media like memes, merchandise items, even coloring books. And that happened in the most mysterious ways, with a questionable choice of works that go from absolute masterpieces like The Rock (1996), Face/Off (1997), or Mandy (2018), to uncountable straight-to-video pieces of shit. Come on, the man even has an Oscar for one of the most dramatic roles of his career with Leaving Las Vegas (1995)!
I could elaborate on this intro for hours and hours, lines and lines, but let’s go straight to the point. Because in action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) he plays a role he might be somehow familiar with, he plays Nic Cage.
Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan. Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nic Cage.
Oh, and it has transcended that Nicolas Cage will reprise some of his most iconic roles from movies like Con Air (1997), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000), and Face/Off (1997) (including using Castor Troy‘s Golden Guns).
This is the new movie from writer and director Tom Gormican after the comedy That Awkward Moment (2014) and being the creator of the horror-comedy TV series Ghosted (2017). Kevin Etten has been the co-writer of the screenplay.
Overshadowed by the presence of Nicolas Cage, the cast of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) also include Pedro Pascal, Neil Patrick Harris, Tiffany Haddish, Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Eli Jane, Jacob Scipio, Alessandra Mastronardi, Joanna Bobin, and Paco León. Will it also include the cameo appearances of Quentin Tarantino, Naomi Watts, Charlie Sheen, and Jim Carrey, as they are in the script? We will have to wait for that.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) is scheduled to be theatrically released on April 22, 2022, by Lionsgate. The first trailer for the movie is out now and you can watch it here.
