David Cronenberg is the undisputed king of body horror. Although the Canadian filmmaker is still active and in good creative shape, his works on the last years are far from those twisted creations of audiovisual pseudo-science madness that put his name high on the world of extreme films. Shivers (1975), The Brood (1979), Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Fly (1986), eXistenZ (1999) and even his recent short film and little masterpiece The Nest (2013) have been certifying that for decades. Now, his second feature film Rabid (1977) is having a remake made by fellow Canadian duo Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska.
John Serge, writer of several horror and thriller films like My Mother’s Secret (2012), A Sister’s Revenge (2013), Dead on Campus (2014), Killer Crush (2015) or The Perfect Soulmate (2017), has co-written the screenplay for Rabid (2019) together with Jen and Sylvia Soska. The official plot of the movie reads “What happens when you realize that to achieve your dreams you have to live a nightmare? Rose is a quiet, demure, unassuming woman in her looks and actions. Her dream is to become a famous designer in the fashion world, but a terrible accident leaves Rose scarred beyond recognition. She seeks out a radical untested stem cell treatment. The treatment is nothing short of a miracle and wallflower Rose turns into the belle of the ball. It all seems too good to be true. She is now everything she wanted to be. But everything in life comes at a price and this new found perfect life is no exception”.
Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, also known as Twisted Twins, have been building a solid career as independent horror filmmakers since their debut with Dead Hooker in a Trunk (2009), which they also starred. In a decade they have been responsible for a good bunch of short films, collaborations and feature titles including American Mary (2012), See No Evil 2 (2014), Vendetta (2015) and the segment “T is for Torture Porn” in ABCs of Death 2 (2014). Raising from the underground, Rabid (2019) is probably the title that could put their names in the list of horror filmmakers to always have taken into consideration.
Rabid (2019) is starred by Laura Vandervoort, Greg Bryk, Stephen Huszar, Stephen McHattie, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Avaah Blackwell, Vanessa Jackson, Ted Atherton, Mackenzie Gray, Lynn Lowry, C.M. Punk, Tristan Risk and Hanneke Talbot. Also, Jen and Sylvia Soska have saved small roles for themselves. Rabid (2019) will have its world premiere this August as part of the line-up of FrightFest, perhaps the most important horror and fantasy film festival in the UK, which is celebrating its 20th year of running. The festival will take place from the 22nd to the 26th of August. After that, the movie will come out on domestic video on the 1st of January.
