Amazon Studios, in collaboration with Annapurna Television and Morgan Creek Entertainment, have developed the TV series adaptation for the popular David Cronenberg psychological horror thriller Dead Ringers (1988). The movie became a cult classic, together with other amazing titles the Canadian filmmaker released in the 1980s like Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Dead Zone (1983), and The Fly (1986) which gave him the nickname the Master of Body Horror. In the original movie, Jeremy Irons played Beverly and Elliot Mantle where twin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman. The movie was based on the novel Twins by horror and science-fiction author Bari Wood.
The Dead Ringers (2023– ) series, initially consisting of 6 episodes, centers on The Mantle Twins, identical from head to toe, who are on a mission to change the way women give birth, starting in Manhattan.
Alice Birch, nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for the series Normal People (2020) and also a nominee for the BAFTA Film Award for The Wonder (2022) and Lady Macbeth (2016), is the show’s creator and writer.
Rachel Weisz has been set to portray The Mantle Twins. Coincidentally, this is not the first time she plays twins, as she played two sisters in Constantine (2005). Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, and Britne Oldford also form the main cast with Jeremy Shamos, Jennifer Ehle, Emily Meade, Gabi Carrubba, Jennean Farmer, and John Wu in recurrent roles.
Dead Ringers (2023– ) will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 21, 2023. Watch here its first official teaser trailer.
