Final Girls is a horror thriller novel by author Riley Sager published this very year 2017. It’s welcoming was so positive that Universal Pictures has taken no time in getting the adaptation rights for the piece and start to prepare the movie. I guess the words by Stephen King calling the book “The first great thriller of 2017” had some effects!
The concept of “final girl” is well known by us horror fans. That female character that at the end of a movie escapes from the slaughtering of all her friends and family either killing the bad guy or simply managing to run away leaving the doors open for sequels. Some perfect examples of final girls in some of the best horror films of all time could be Laurie Strode from Halloween (1978), Ellen Ripley from Alien (1979) or Sydney Prescott from Scream (1996). And this is what Riley Sager’s book is about.
In the novel Final Girls, college student Quincy Carpenter was the sole survivor of a vacations massacre where 5 of her friends were murdered. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to a group of similar survivors known in the press as “The Final Girls”. She, together with other 2 female survivors are attempting to put their nightmares behind them, although they always refused to meet each other. So after all the struggle, Quincy is finally doing well. She has a successful blog, has found romance in her life, and everything looks shiny in her path. Yeah, and her Xanax prescription is probably also helping. But everything goes south when Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in a mysterious way. The second of the Final Girls, Sam, tries to get in touch with Quincy in an attempt to make her relive the past. When the details of the recent murdering come to light, Quincy’s life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel what is the truth, what is fantasy and what is a lie.
A movie with a similar name and plot, although more in the terrains of fantasy and comedy, came out recently. So don’t mistake this future adaptation with the quite cool flick The Final Girls (2015) –Read our review here–.
