An Unquiet Grave (2020) was an independent horror drama that achieved several award-winnings and became one of the most interesting titles of the 2020 genre season. Directed by Terence Krey, who was also the co-writer of the screenplay with the main star of the film Christine Nyland, the pair are joining forces again in the survival thriller Distress Signals (2022).
This new movie centers on Caroline who after a fall down a steep rock she faces herself separated from her friends and finds herself stranded. Now, alone and with a dislocated shoulder, she must make her way out of the woods–and contend with how she got there.
Terence Krey and Christine Nyland share the direction, screen-writing, and producing credits in the movie. Christine Nyland is also the main star with Terence Krey playing a supporting role.
Jonathon Strauss, Stephanie Hains, Donna Maria Wood, and Christian Nilsson complete the main cast.
The directors state about the movie that “In 2020, as the world ground to a halt, we – like everyone else – found ourselves canceling our plans. In our case, that meant shelving the film we’d intended to make that summer, even though we were more restless than ever. Desperate for something to hang on to as the world turned upside down, we briefly considered making a screen movie, but far too much of our lives had already transitioned to zoom, so our conversations turned toward isolation and depression – and the antidotes we craved. We wanted to do something together. We wanted to escape the walls we’d been surrounded by for months. We wanted horizon lines”. They continue “we followed those impulses into the woods – with the most pared-down team we could imagine – and found a meditation on survival, and a growing interest in how a familiar narrative becomes fundamentally different when there is a woman at its center”.
Distress Signals (2022) was part of the Popcorn Frights Film Festival on August 18, 2022, where it collected positive reviews. Dark Sky Films has the distribution rights for the film and will release it on May 12, 2023.
