Like it was a dream made true. For a vampire lover like filmmaker as Denise Castro is, to premiere her new film Denise Castro’s Dracula (Drácula de Denise Castro in original Spanish language) (2018) this next weekend at the International Vampire Film and Arts Festival in Sighișoara, in the Rumanian region of Transylvania is like the best setting ever.
The movie is some sort of found footage films parody about a small crew in Transylvania with the goal of filming their own version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Serving also as a fake documentary (or mockumentary), the filmmakers suffer all kinds of maledictions and misfortune as supernatural events take over the filming sets. Because the movie might be done in the key of humor, but we must never forget horror and frightful shit happens all the way.
Denise Castro’s Dracula (2018) has been written and directed by Denise Castro, who also reserves a supporting role in the movie. With her, Claudia Trujillo, Ricard Balada and Alfredo Ruiz complete the small cast. And yes, also a small crew since Denise Castro took care of the sound recording too, and actor Alfredo Ruiz also served as camera operator and film editor.
Writer, director and occasional actress Denise Castro debuted as director of a feature film with Salvación (2016), that tells the story of a thirteen year old girl who is admitted to a hospital to undergo open heart surgery. There she meets a boy her same age who says he’s a vampire and who proposes a different kind of salvation for her heart: immortality. Another clear example of the healthy obsession this young filmmaker has with vampires. She was also one of the directors of Maniac Tales (2016), about a series of creepy events happening in an old building in New York. Hers is the segment “Skull of Desire“.
