Mother, May I? (2023) is a psychological horror-thriller centering on Anya, who starts behaving like her recently-deceased mother while her lover Emmett must confront his deepest traumas to free his fiancee from this bewildering possession.

In the movie, Emmett wants to clean and flip his recently deceased mother’s house: get in, get out, and avoid any trauma still lingering from when she abandoned him as a young child. Anya, his fiancé, see’s this as an opportunity to finally force Emmett to deal with his trauma because she believes it is preventing him from being the partner she needs. So she convinces him to take mushrooms to get him to let go. But something strange happens while they’re tripping: she starts behaving like his mother. The next morning he wakes up sober, but she still won’t drop the act… Anya loves playing games – is this her taking it too far? Or did his mother’s spirit somehow possess her?

This is the second feature film from producer, writer, and director Laurence Vannicelli after debuting with the drama-thriller Vera (2015). Perhaps he is better known for being the co-writer and producer of the horror-comedy Porno (2019) [read our review here].

Holland Roden, who also serves as producer on the film, Kyle Gallner, and Chris Mulkey form the main cast of Mother, May I? (2023).

Dark Sky Films is distributing and is having selected theatrical release dates this month before it opens on digital platforms on July 21, 2023. Watch the official trailer for Mother, May I? (2023).
