Confirmed: Jamie Foxx will star in the new "Spawn" movie

He was in all the polls and at the end it has been confirmed: Jamie Foxx will be Al Simmons / Spawn in Spawn (2019). Another actor who was a stronger candidate for the role was Cuba Gooding Jr, but producers at the end decided in favor of the star of movies like Django Unchained (2012), Sleepless (2017) or Bait (2000). The movie is currently in pre-production, although it was reported to begin filming in February 2018.

In the original Spawn comic books, appeared for the first time in 1992 published by Image Comics, Al Simmons was a highly trained Force Recon Marine who was at his most successful point when he saved the President from an attempted assassination. He was promoted to a high level and recruited to a highly classified unit within the CIA devoted to black ops. Once there, he began to question the morality of what his agency was doing. Betrayed and murdered by his best friend and partner, Simmons’ soul was sent to Hell due to his killings and immoral actions taken while working for the CIA. There, in the deep wells of Hell, Simmons made a deal with an evil being known as Malebolgia: in exchange for his soul, he would get to see once again his wife, Wanda. However, when Simmons returned to the human world, five years had passed, and he had been transformed into a demonic creature with little memory of his former life. After regaining his memories, he sought out his wife, only to find she had moved on and married his best friend and butcher and that they now had a daughter. Double hardcore betrayal for a half-demon half-trained assassin human turns Spawn into a timebomb.

Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn and writer in several superhero-based TV shows and video games like Spawn animation series (1997–1999), Smallville (2001–2011), Young Justice (2010– ) or Guardians of the Galaxy (2015– ), will do his debut directing a feature film with Spawn (2019), which he’s also has written its screenplay. Blumhouse Productions, together with McFarlane Films, are producing. The movie has an estimated budget of between 12 and 15 million dollars. It’s been made public that both producers and director are aiming to obtain an R-Rated label due to its strong contents, so we better buckle up because this shit is getting serious, and finally, we’ll have our chance to forget the first awful adaptation Spawn (1997).
